Adventure Sailing is all about cultivating a love for the ocean and Duxbury Bay through sailing. Along with expanding their sailing skills, students will learn about navigation, anchoring, marine ecology, weather, and much more. Enjoy adventurous sails to various Duxbury Bay locations such as Clarks Island, Duxbury Beach, Gurnett Creek, Captain’s Flat and much more! Students will be exposed to the many different types of boats DBMS has to offer, such as Hobie Catamarans, Marshall 15s, and Flying Scots. There will always be an instructor in the boat to help encourage students in a fun environment. Students will be inspired to pursue their love of sailing for a lifetime.

The Friday of this week-long course will be a 6 hour destination picnic sail so students can show off the skills they learned. Be sure to pack a lunch!

This course incorporates aspects of US Sailing’s S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering and math) initiative that encourages learning through outdoor classroom fun.

Opti Learn To Race

Ages: 10-13 Prerequisites: Opti II and recommendation to advance Requirements: Competent Swimmer

Students will begin working on racing topics and techniques while becoming more proficient sailors.

Topics include, but aren’t limited to, starts, downwind boat handling, mark roundings and regatta tips/ info.

Students will be highly encouraged to compete in the Duxbury Yacht Club Regatta and DBMS Jr. Regatta. Coaches for this course are planning on coaching students during the DYC Regatta which occurs during the week. Due to this, the normal class will not be held on these 2 days. For these days students may either participate in the regatta and receive coaching from their normal coaches, or join the Opti II class those days.

Hartley 12

The Hartley 12 is a fast modern boat designed for both new and experienced sailors. Students will be challenged to enhance their sailing techniques. Junior Sailing programs meet rain or shine. Please dress accordingly.

Catamaran

This course is designed for older, thrill seeking students! Our Hobie Getaway catamaran is fast and fun.
This is the perfect course if you want to blast around the harbor and fly an A-symmetrical spinnaker.
Junior Sailing programs meet rain or shine. Please dress accordingly.

420 Beginner

Ages: 13-17 Prerequisites: None Requirements: Competent Swimmer / Sailor must weigh at least 105 lbs

Learn the basics of boating safety, nomenclature, rigging, sail handling and steering in a two person boat. Sailors in 420s and FJs should weigh a minimum of 105lbs. Sailors may sail 420s or FJs exclusively or both boats depending on what the program and instructors decide. Sailors that have successfully completed Opti LTR or Opti Racer and raceived a recommendation to advance should be taking 420 Transitional Racing instead of this class. Junior Sailing programs meet rain or shine. Please dress accordingly.

420 Intermediate

Focus on improving and refining boat-handling skills in a 420. Towards the end of the course, students will begin to learn the very basic first steps to racing. Junior Sailing programs meet rain or shine. Please dress accordingly.

420 Transitional Racing

Ages: 13-17 Prerequisites: Opti LTR or Racer and recommendation to advance Requirements: Competent Swimmer / Sailor must weigh at least 105 lbs

This class is for sailors who already know the basics of racing and have a good amout of experience doing so. The course will cover racing tactics and strategies as well as advanced boat handling skills in the 420.

Coaches will focus on having the students master the main and jib but will not incorporate trapeze or spinnakers in this course. Students will be encouraged to compete in the DBMS, DYC regattas without a spinnaker. Eligibility to sail in other local and regional regattas will be determined by coaches.

420 Racer Traps & Chutes

Ages: 14-17 Prerequisites: 420 INT or 420 Trans Racing and recommendation to advance Requirements: Competent Swimmer / Sailor must weigh at least 105 lbs

This class is a 420 racing class that incorporates spinnakers and trapezes into racing. Students will learn that spinnakers and trapezes are an integral part of racing during the summer series and will use these new found skills to advance their racing techniques.

Students will be highly encouraged to compete in the Plymouth, Duxbury Yacht Club and DBMS Jr. Regattas. Coaches for this course are planning on coaching students during the Plymouth and DYC Regattas which occur during the week. Due to this, the normal class will not be held those days. For these days students may either participate in the regatta and receive coaching from their normal coaches or join the 420 Transitional Racing class at the same time for those days.

Parent Sail and Sea

Parent sails during child's lesson $25

This is your time! Book your sail with a friend, family or other children. Enjoy the bay and have some fun while your child is in class.

Sails are 1 hour, open to 4 people per sailboat with a DBMS Instructor. Children are welcome to sail with an adult (one child per adult) and must have a approved personal floatation device. For $25 you will be taken out in a Marshall 15’ by a DBMS instructor who sail you around the bay for 1 hour. The Sail and Sea excursions will take place every week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Minimum age is 2 and children under 5 are free. Kids 6 and older need to pay for a seat.
