4th overall in the 420 North American Championship!

DBMS Varsity Sailors Addy White and Andrew Sommer finished 4th overall in the 420 North American Championship. The Club 420 North American Championship (one of two major annual events in the C420 class) was held August 8-11 on Chautauqua Lake in Jamestown, NY, hosted by the Chatauqua Lake Yacht Club with Rick Turner acting as regatta chair. There were 84 entries, including sailors from the US, Canada, and the US Virgin Islands.

The event took place over 4 days with 14 races completed. Extremely shifty and variable winds (3-18 kts) with thunderstorms caused several races to be abandoned. Under these conditions skippers and crews had to be very alert. With this many boats starting lines were a mass of confusion and mark rounding became very exciting. Most races were quite close with many different winners of individual races. Andrew and Addy won 1 race, finished 4th overall, and were the top team from New England.

The Club 420 class is the largest double handed class for junior sailors in North America and is used for club, high school, and collegiate training and racing. The largest number of boats come from the New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest states, but top racers also come from California, the Gulf Coast and the Virgin Islands.

DBMS is extremely proud of Andrew and Addy’s accomplishment since both of these sailors, who are now DHS seniors, have sailed in DBMS programs since grade school—Addy since 2000 and Andrew since 2001!
