DBMS receives Marine Ecology grant from Battelle

Duxbury Bay Maritime School has received a grant from Battelle Memorial Institute to underwrite the school’s popular Big Fish, Little Fish and First Wave marine ecology programs. Battelle has been supporting these programs aimed at promoting awareness and stewardship of our maritime environment since 2004. The check was presented to DBMS Executive Director, Chuck Leonard and Development Director, Georgia Cosgrove by Tracy Stenner, who is Vice president and General Manager of Battelle’s Environmental Product Line.

Battelle is the world’s largest nonprofit independent research and development organization. The Applied Coastal and Environmental Services (ACES) group that is based in Duxbury, “specializes in a science-based approach to manage and protect water resources”. According to Stenner, “about two-thirds of Battelle’s philanthropic dollars are earmarked for education projects from early childhood through college,” making the DBMS ecology programs that are designed for children ages 3 to 10 a great fit with their corporate mission and local focus on educating children about marine life in and around Duxbury Bay.

With the new DBMS facility complete, plans are underway to establish a permanent marine ecology classroom on campus that will be available year-round for education programs and research projects. Battelle’s Duxbury-based scientists look forward to partnering with DBMS in this endeavor.
