Going Green at DBMS

On a daily basis, DBMS instructors have found that they throw away hundreds of disposable water bottles. At the end of the day, the bottles overfill our trashcans, spilling over and falling into the bay. Kids leave them on the dock where a prevailing wind blows them onto Duxbury Beach. Many remain full of water, with students only bothering to take a few sips of water.

To alleviate the consumption of petroleum based products and to raise awareness of wastefulness of bottled water, a generous donation has been made by the Charles Schwab Corporation, supplying every DBMS sailing and rowing student enrolled in the session beginning August 4 with a personalized safe, reusable water bottle. Our hope is to reduce the number of disposable water bottles that cycle their way through our campus and into the dumpster.

Unfortunately, because of a supply shortage, some students will receive their bottles during week two of the session. However, we hope the message we are trying to convey—that the single use water bottle is a wasteful convenience and not a necessity—begins to take hold in DBMS families and beyond. Compare the unit cost of Poland Spring with the price of gasoline, and clean water from the tap looks pretty good!
