If you have been on campus lately, you know that things are changing! Where the rusty old tin boat shed once stood, our beautiful multi-purpose building is rising rapidly. Now that we have survived our last sweltering summer and are bracing for the last chilly winter in our rickety old home, we just hope the rumbling of heavy equipment outside our office windows doesn’t give gravity the upper hand prematurely!
Frequently I take a self guided tour of the construction site and envision what will take place starting this coming spring:
Just last week the undercoat layer of pavement has been completed. Can you believe we will have 74 parking places, including 3 for handicapped participants? This is 15% more than the town lot which has only 63 spaces.
Then, there is a place for the dumpster that is NOT right next to the front door. Envision, if you will, landscaping like Rosaregosa, lilacs, and more, engraved pavers, and a compass rose surrounding a flag pole that is all surrounded by green grass.
Inside we will have men’s and women’s changing / washrooms that don’t have picture windows facing the parking lot but will have showers, lockers and hanging hooks. Our administrative offices are designed much more efficiently, allowing for better communication, more privacy and a better work flow environment.
Above the men’s and women’s changing rooms, we will have winter storage for Opti’s and Prams; and in the summer this space will convert into a classroom or movie theater for those inclement weather days.
Above the offices we will enjoy an absolutely fantastic view of Duxbury Bay from our multi-purpose great room where we will have banquets, awards nights, classrooms, erging and much more. Step out on the second floor balcony deck overlooking the harbor and you will see there is a spectacular view.
Downstairs on the north end of the new building, is the storage / maintenance area. Here we will be able to store our fleet on the premises instead of commuting the equipment to and from borrowed space off site. This will save on wear and tear of our equipment and allow us better opportunity to do regular maintenance.
There will be a deck wrapping nearly all the way around the building that will be a daily meeting place prior to class, a fun summer picnic lunch spot for the family, an area for race committee meetings before regattas or just a nice place to hang out!
I know it’s still early, but Ford Construction is, at the moment, well ahead of schedule. They tell me that if we continue to have a mild fall and they can get the building sealed to the weather by the end of November, we can probably move in during the middle of May! This means that we could have that controlled burn or demolition of the old building at the end of May and get our final site work done for the beginning of the summer 2009. YES!
