This 16-hour hands-on, on-the-water course is for anyone who wants to learn how to safely operate a small motorboat and improve their boathandling skills. No previous experience is required! The US Coast Guard and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved this course and an increasing number of states have recognized it as meeting their requirements for a State Boating Education Certificate.

These national and state approvals call for the course to include a total of six to eight hours of classroom sessions covering required education topics.

Classroom Sessions: Safety, preparation & weather, Maneuvering concepts, Registration & capacities, Equipment requirements, Preparation & fueling procedures, Navigation rules of the road, Aids to navigation, Environment regulations.

On-the-Water Sessions: Engine & electrical systems, Starting procedures, Docking, Leaving & returning to a slip, Close-quarters maneuvers, Anchoring, Steering a range, Proceeding to a destination, Person in Water rescue.

Certification(s) Earned:

  • US Sailing/US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling Certificate (50 question Multiple Choice exam passing grade of 80% or better)
  • Commonwealth of Massachusetts Boating Safety Certificate (Pass  US Powerboating exam and Massachusetts Supplemental 10 question Multiple Choice exam passing grade of 80% or better)

US Sailing Membership is not required to participate in a Safe Powerboat Handling course.

This course will use the US POWERBOATING: Start Powerboating Right!  and BOAT MASSACHUSETTS supplemental text. (Provided by DBMS)  This program includes 6 hours of classroom, with hands-on activities; knots and hitches, creating float plans, basic navigation and piloting, and safety and emergency procedures.

This course also creates the foundation for those who may want to work in the future as a Launch Operator, Race Support Boat, or obtain OUPV (6pak) Captain’s License.

Group/Family Powerboat Education

Ages: 12 and Over   Prerequisites: None  Requirements: At least 1 member of each group must be 18 years old or older.

** Each group/family is encouraged to use their power boat (17′-33′) for on-the-water time.

In the classroom, on-the-dock and on-the-water! This course meets NASBLA, USCG and Commonwealth of Massachusetts requirements for issuance of Boating Safety Certificate. This boating safety course, concentrates on the equipment and operating guidelines needed to enjoy boating in a safe and responsible way. Also, if using your own vessel DBMS instructors will provide specific instructions for your vesssel, and a complimentary check of “Required Equipment”.

In addition to 8 hours of classroom time, this course includes 1 hour of on-the-dock training, 1hr examination time, and 5 + hours of on-the-water.  Modeled after “Driver’s Education” the 5 + hours of on-the-water time is designed to provide instructional demonstrations, the opportunity for each student to practice at the helm and learn from observing other students at the helm.

Upon successful completion of this course and BOAT MASSACHUSETTS EXAM (50 question Multiple Choice exam passing grade of 80% or better) a Commonwealth of Massachusetts BoatingSafety Certificate will be issued.  This certificate allows 12 to 15 year-olds to operate a motorboat without adult supervision, and 16 & 17 year-olds to operate personal watercraft (jet ski, wave runner, etc). Also, many insurance companies offer a discount to vessel operators who have taken an approved safety course.

Powerboating Education

Women Underway

Ages: 19+ Prerequisites: None  Requirements: None

Women Underway provides a comfortable and fun setting for women to learn hands on basic boating skills. 

Program will include Boat Massachusetts curriculum, on the water vessel operation and observation. DBMS staff will also demonstrate vessel trailering, launching and loading.

All participants will be eligible to take the Massachusetts Safety Certificate exam (50 question Multiple Choice exam passing grade of 80% or better). Safety Certificate holders usually receive discounts on boat insurance. Also, many boat rental companies require this or other training prior to rental.

All students will enjoy the beauty of Duxbury Bay while operating or observing as we powerboat around the bay learning boat handling, aids to navigation and “rules of the road”.

Enrollment is limited.

Program includes snacks each day, a gift and lunch on day 2. Weather permitting lunch on day 2 will be enjoyed while cruisng around the bay.
