Speed & Smarts Seminars

‘You can’t always win the race, but you can always learn something that will give you a better chance of winning the next race.’

This has always been the guiding philosophy behind Speed & Smarts newsletter, and now it applies to the new Speed & Smarts Strategy and Tactics Seminars as well.

Most sailors want to keep learning, and that’s what these seminars are all about. They’re filled with race-winning tips, tricks and wisdom, much of which comes from nearly 25 years of Speed & Smarts newsletters.

Each seminar is about three hours long, including breaks, and features diagrams, videos, photos and other techniques for sharing strategic and tactical tips. The seminar will discuss how to handle common racing situations, and there should be plenty of time for questions.

Seminar 1: STARTING

This seminar examines the strategy and tactics of Starting. Topics include starting philosophy, pre-start planning, picking a place to start, the importance of line bias, using a line sight, current, defending your hole, making a final approach, coming off the line, troubleshooting, evaluating risk, key racing rules and more!

Seminar 2: UPWIND

This seminar explains the strategy and tactics of racing Upwind. Topics include how to pick the favored side, windshift strategy, risk and reward, first beat vs. second beat, laylines, current, strategic rules of thumb, covering, wind shadows, tactical positioning, light vs. heavy air, fleet management, key racing rules, and more!

All seminar participants get:

  • A course workbook you can use to track the discussion and take notes.
  • A 16-page issue of Speed & Smarts that covers the seminar topic. We will email this to you after the seminar.
  • A special seminar discount on all educational materials from Speed & Smarts, including subscriptions, back issues and our new online training course called ‘Learn The Racing Rules 2020’
  • A Speed & Smarts pen
