Participating in maritime activities allows kids to develop new skills, explore our bay, encounter marine life in our Marine Science Lab, and learn about careers in the maritime industry. Additionally, these activities teach the importance of teamwork and a positive attitude in achieving goals—both on and off the water.
Since 2000, DBMS has partnered with Crossroads for Kids to offer a tuition-free, on-the-water program for at-risk urban youth. Now called Maritime Adventures, the program has expanded to serve youth from community organizations seeking to incorporate maritime education and recreation. Each summer, Maritime Adventures provides hundreds of middle and high school campers with an enriching, eight-week experience on the water.
Through maritime activities, participants develop new skills, explore the bay, encounter marine life in our Marine Science Lab, and learn about careers in the maritime industry. The program also emphasizes teamwork and a positive attitude—both essential for success on and off the water. Each camper takes part in five to seven 2.5-hour on-the-water sessions, gaining hands-on experience in sailing, boating, and marine exploration. In 2021, we began expanding Maritime Adventures by partnering with local organizations, and we welcome new collaborations.
DBMS provides Maritime Adventures free of charge to participants and relies on fundraising to cover operating and capital costs. For more information about camper eligibility, program details, or ways to support Maritime Adventures, please contact DBMS.
